Wing Chun

Wing Chun is a Chinese martial art. It originated from Kung Fu. The special way of punching and the fast switching from defense to attacking makes Wing Chun one of the fastest martial arts in the world.

Origin

We go back in time 250 years. A Chinese Kung Fu monastery was occupied by Manchu soldiers. One day, there was a fire in the monastery. Almost all inhabitants were killed by the disaster except a few Kung Fu masters who managed to escape. One of them was the Buddhist nun Ng Mui. She was an old smart woman with a lot of experience and knowledge. She invented a new Kung Fu style to take revenge on the Manchu soldiers.

New Style

One day Ng Mui witnessed a fight between a snake and a crane. The crane defended itself in a special way. It stood   in the middle and the snake  drew circ les around it. Every time the snake tried to attack, the crane blocked the hit with its wing, and after that it hit back with the other wing. The snake was completely powerless and took a lot of pain. This was exactly what Ng Mui was looking for. She invented a fighting routine like the way the crane was doing it. It took her five years to complete the whole new style.

Yim Wing Chun

One day Ng Mui met a young girl named Yim Wing Chun. She was harassed by a big strong man and very much wanted to learn to defend herself so she didn't have to be afraid anymore. Ng Mui taught her the new style. After Yim Wing Chun learned how to use the new style, she went back to the strong man, telling him she wasn't afraid of him anymore. As expected, the man wanted to defeat her right away. Yim Wing Chun used the new powerful style and within a few seconds the muscled man was defeated and laying on the floor. This was the evidence Ng Mui needed to convince herself of the working of the new style. She called it after her first student: Wing Chun!

Effective

In Wing Chun, all attacking and defending movements are made in a straight line forward. You make a straight punch forward which ends exactly in the middle (i.e. in the face of your opponent). Next you pull back your arm and while doing this, you hit with the other arm at the same spot you hit before. When you do this in a really fast way, you get a 'machine gun' effect of punches, making it hard for your opponent to respond. And because of the fact that your arm is in a straight line in front of your body, it is hard for your opponent to hit you back in an effective way. In Wing Chun kicks are also used, also in a straight line forward. These kicks are especially aimed at the knee, because this is a vulnerable spot: it will make it very hard for an opponent to continue fighting when hit at the knee.

Pros and cons

At the end I put some pros and cons in a row. When you are interested to learn more about this martial art, I can only advise you to do so!

Cons

  • It takes a long time to learn the style before you can use it in the real world.

Pros

  • Within a few seconds you can eliminate your opponent.
  • It is a relatively unknown style, meaning that you can surprise your opponent with it.
  • You will get more self-convidence because you know how to defend yourself.
